Habeck calls for Ukraine to join the EU quickly

2:42 p.m.: Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck is in favor of Ukraine quickly joining the EU. The process must be accelerated and it shouldn’t always just be a debate, said the Economics Minister in Berlin, according to the text of his speech, at an event to mark the 20th anniversary of the EU’s eastward expansion. The next round of expansion will bring further prosperity and also more security. “We need to significantly strengthen our military capabilities, together with the EU and NATO.”

The Eastern European EU states in particular are exposed to a real danger of a Russian attack, added the Green politician. Russia’s attack on Ukraine brought a lot of suffering. “People die there every day and there is no end in sight.” Russian President Vladimir Putin must not win the war in Ukraine, otherwise he will continue.

“80 years ago, millions of Ukrainians fought to defeat Nazism forever,” he says in a video message recorded there. “But today Ukrainians are once again standing against the evil that has been reborn, has come back and wants to destroy us again.”

The Moscow Foreign Ministry says this is just a pretext. The federal government wants to use this “myth” to further escalate tensions between the two countries.
