Nvidia’s RTX 50 Series: A Groundbreaking Performance Breakthrough

Nvidia’s RTX 50 series graphics cards were the talk of CES 2025, stealing the show with promises of groundbreaking performance breakthroughs. The RTX 5070, in particular, made headlines by offering similar performance to the RTX 4090 for just $549. This impressive feat is achieved by using DLSS 4’s AI-powered multi-frame generation technology, which significantly boosts frame rates at both 1440p and 4K resolutions.

The RTX 5080 and RTX 5090, on the other hand, offer greater raw performance. Our tests found the RTX 5080 to be only about 15% faster than the RTX 4080, while the RTX 5090 averaged 28% better frame rates compared to the RTX 4090 for 4K games running at their highest settings with no frame generation help. This is quite impressive, considering the Founder’s Edition is significantly smaller than the 4090, making it compatible with small form factor PC cases.

Where to Preorder Nvidia RTX 5080 and RTX 5090

As of writing, Best Buy is the only third-party retailer with listings for the Founders Editions of the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090. Nvidia will also sell them directly, but their listings haven’t been spotted as of now. There are multiple options from various manufacturers across all retailers, including MSI, Asus, Gigabyte, and more. These third-party cards offer unique designs and features, with some models even including liquid cooling systems. Gigabyte has some compact options, so be sure to plan your build accordingly.

Tips to Boost Your Chances of Scoring an RTX 50 Series GPU

If you’re ready to secure an RTX 50 series GPU, here are some tips to increase your chances:

  1. Use a hardwired computer: A desktop or laptop with an ethernet connection can help ensure you don’t miss out due to network issues.
  2. Keep your smartphone and tablet handy: Some retailers may use a wait queue. Your secondary device can serve as a backup.
  3. Create accounts at every retailer: The last thing you want is to fidget with passwords and confirmation emails. Create accounts in advance.
  4. Add payment and shipping info: Preemptively add your payment and shipping details to speed up the checkout process.
  5. Sign up for stock notifications: Best Buy and B&H Photo allow sign-ups for email alerts when the GPUs become available.
  6. Check websites regularly: Don’t rely solely on email notifications. Regularly check retailer websites and practice hitting refresh.
  7. Use social media to your advantage: Follow Nvidia and retailers on social media for potential stock alerts. Also, follow deal hunters like Wario64.

Third-Party Retailers and Prebuilt Desktops

Eventually, a range of laptops and pre-built desktop PCs using the GPUs will become available. Online retailers like Newegg and Micro Center currently list various third-party 50 series graphics cards, although most are out of stock as of writing. You can also find prebuilt desktops with RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 cards at Newegg and B&H Photo. Both retailers require you to join a waitlist and purchase opportunities will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Amazon and Adorama have historically carried the newest GPUs at or close to launch, but neither has individual GPU listings as of writing. Adorama currently lists prebuilt desktops with RTX 5090 cards, but none are available for purchase. Nvidia’s online store promises to sell Founders Editions directly, but both RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 listings were unavailable as of writing.

Stay tuned for more updates on stock and availability. Good luck, and happy gaming!

Update, January 30th: Updated to reflect current availability for the RTX 50 series cards at several retailers.
