Microsoft is rolling out a new disc-to-digital feature that allows owners of physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs to obtain free digital licenses and play titles without a disc in the drive. Starting August 31, 2026, members of the Xbox Insider program can test the service, which aims to preserve game libraries while helping players transition to digital ecosystems.
How the Disc-to-Digital Upgrade Functions
The system then automatically assigns a digital entitlement to the user’s account. Once the digital license is registered, players can access the game via cloud gaming or multiplatform features like Xbox Play Anywhere without keeping the disc in the console. The original physical disc remains fully functional after the upgrade and can still be used as before. The initial launch supports thousands of titles, though publisher approval is required, meaning not every game will be available immediately. Supported media includes Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, along with multi-disc games and console-bundled discs, while older Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs are excluded due to manufacturing limitations.

Industry Context and Platform Strategy
Microsoft frames the new feature under the umbrella of game preservation, noting that physical libraries hold years of player memories. It holds years of memories and stories worth preserving.
Starting next week, XBOX Insiders can unlock a digital entitlement for supported physical games.
We’ll start with thousands of titles and add more as we can.
The move follows a decision by Sony to phase out physical disk versions of games for its upcoming console generations. While Sony's approach emphasizes a strict divide between physical media and digital licenses—where players own only a revocable license—Microsoft's disc-to-digital initiative attempts to bridge physical collections with cloud gaming infrastructure.
