If you really want to ‘detox’?…Essential nutrients recommended by pharmacists

There are many people who go on a detox diet for the coming summer. This type of diet may have a temporary weight loss effect, but when you return to a normal diet, not only there will be a yo-yo phenomenon, but also the risk of gallstones is high, so you need to be careful. Then what should we do for a really basic detox instead of a short term action? Pharmacist Kim Ji-young said, “If you want to make a sustainable detoxification instead of a temporary effect, the secret is to strengthen the liver function.”

If the product is used to repeatedly release accumulated toxins, it has the disadvantage of weakening the natural excretion function by reducing the self-detoxification ability. Pharmacist Kim Ji-young says it’s better to activate the body’s own detoxification and excreting system so that toxins don’t build up in the first place. Then, which organs are responsible for getting rid of toxins in our body? The ‘liver’, which is the tidal flat of our body.

The liver’s detoxification function removes harmful substances through metabolism and detoxification processes, and quickly removes toxins that enter the body. It changes drugs, food, and toxic substances into a form that is easily excreted, such as bile or urine. Basic detoxification is only carried out when the detoxification function is smooth. In order to create such a detoxification state, pharmacist Kim Ji-young recommended taking ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), and explained that there are four main reasons for the recommendation.

1. UDCA Detoxification (Washing Out)
Firstly, UDCA helps the liver to detoxify and facilitate the release. Metabolic enzymes are needed for metabolism to proceed in our body, and excretory transporters are needed for excretion, and UDCA increases these to help activate liver function.

2. Antioxidant action of UDCA
UDCA itself is an antioxidant, so it has the effect of directly protecting liver cells by removing active oxygen that damages the liver. Indirectly, it increases antioxidant enzymes such as GSH and SOD to protect cells.

3. hepatocellular protective action of UDCA
Third, UDCA is a non-toxic bile acid, so it competes with toxic bile acids and protects the liver from damage. By replacing toxic bile acids, it stabilizes hepatocyte membranes and prevents apoptosis by preventing mitochondrial damage in hepatocytes. By this, it protects the liver cells and helps to activate the liver function.

4. UDCA prevents gallstones
Finally, it prevents the production of cholesterol in the liver and the reabsorption of cholesterol in the small intestine, thereby controlling cholesterol levels and preventing gallstones.

Liver supplements are products that are usually of interest to men. This is because frequent drinking and smoking increase the risk of alcoholic fatty liver disease. However, women also benefit from taking UDCA. In addition to healthy detoxification, you can see effects such as skin health and anti-aging.
