Russian ballistic missiles and drones killed at least 13 people across Ukraine on Thursday, with strikes hitting residential and industrial areas in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Sumy, according to Ukrainian officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the raid on Kyiv as one of the most massive ballistic attacks since the full-scale invasion began in 2022, noting that Russia deployed more than 70 missiles and 280 drones overnight.
Ballistic Missiles Strike Kyiv and Regional Targets
In the capital city of Kyiv, explosions rocked neighborhoods as air defense systems intercepted incoming projectiles. The Ukrainian Air Force stated that the capital faced a barrage utilizing Iskander and hypersonic Zircon missiles alongside 125 drones. Klitschko urged residents to seek shelter as firefighters battled blazes at two warehouses. The Ukrainian emergencies ministry reported that a logistics hub in the Bucha district near Kyiv was hit, injuring two people.
Casualties Mount Across Northern and Southern Regions
Beyond the capital, the strikes inflicted heavy casualties across multiple oblasts. In the north-eastern city of Kharkiv, four men aged between 24 and 62 were killed when a postal terminal in the city suburbs was targeted, according to Kharkiv regional head Oleh Syniehubov. Two more fatalities were recorded in Zaporizhzhia in the south, and one person was killed in Sumy in the north-east, local officials confirmed. Additional casualties were reported in the Dnipropetrovsk and Poltava regions.
Writing on Telegram, President Zelenskyy reported that Russian forces launched around 1,450 attack drones, upwards of 1,640 guided bombs, and 99 missiles of varying kinds against Ukraine over the previous week. In response to the escalating aerial bombardment, Poland scrambled fighter jets to protect its airspace following nearby Russian attacks, according to the armed forces of the NATO member state.

Air Defense Supplies and International Response
The assault arrived just hours after Zelenskyy warned that Russia was preparing a massive overnight assault following a report from Air Force Commander Anatolii Kryvonozhko. Speaking on the urgency of bolstering the nation’s defenses, Zelenskyy appealed directly to international partners.

According to Zelenskyy, it remains crucial that international allies fully grasp the situation, emphasizing that human survival relies entirely on their willingness or hesitation to provide air defense missiles.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy
The appeal followed Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington, D.C., where he met with United States President Donald Trump. According to The Associated Press, Trump recently announced at a NATO summit in Turkey that the United States would license Ukraine to manufacture Patriot air defense systems. Zelenskyy emphasized that support regarding Patriot missiles remains critical for intercepting incoming ballistic threats.
