Silencing a Leader: Why India Shouldn’t Hear Hasina Out Until Bangladesh Returns What’s Owed
Sheikh Hasina’s Comments in India Spark Unease in Bangladesh
The interim government’s chief adviser, Muhammad Yunus, has expressed concerns over Sheikh Hasina’s ability to make political comments while in India, referring to it as ‘unfriendly behaviour’. This has created ‘unease’ in the relationship between Dhaka and New Delhi.
Yunus emphasized that Bangladesh will want Sheikh Hasina back, and until then, she should refrain from making public statements in India. In an interview with the Indian news agency PTI, he stated that if India wishes to keep her, there must be a condition: she must remain silent.
Yunus stressed that Sheikh Hasina should not be campaigning from India, where she has taken refuge. He pointed out that she fled Bangladesh due to a popular rebellion and public outrage.
According to Yunus, Sheikh Hasina’s comments from India are not well-received. “Sitting in India, she talks and gives instructions, nobody likes it… It is not good for us, not for India. There is discomfort with this,” he said.
Yunus advocated for Sheikh Hasina’s return to Bangladesh, where she should be tried in a public trial. He also acknowledged that Bangladesh-India relations are currently at a low point and emphasized the need for cooperation to improve them.
