About 53% of Koreans have curly hair. Because curly hair predominates over straight hair, there are many people with curly hair due to genetic influence. They often get a straight perm to straighten their hair to get rid of the messy looking image. In the process, some people suffer from headaches or spiky scalps from the smell of chemical products that sting their noses.

However, a study was published stating that there is a safety problem with Straight Pharma, which is a hot topic. A study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that using a magic straightener used to straighten curly hair doubles the risk of uterine cancer. The thesis is that Magic Straightener contains harmful chemicals with carcinogenic properties that disrupt the endocrine system and increase the risk of hormone sensitive cancer.

Magic, why is it dangerous?

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) followed and analyzed 33,497 women between the ages of 35 and 74 for about 11 years. The study found that women who did not use the hair straightening drug had a 1.64% chance of getting uterine cancer, but women who used the drug four or more times a year had a higher chance of getting uterine cancer up to 4.05%.

“The parabens, bisphenol A, and formaldehyde contained in Magic Straightener increased the risk of uterine cancer,” said Alexandra White, corresponding author of the paper. These ingredients are included in most magic potions and act as preservatives and coatings.

In addition, Dr. White said, “It seems that there is a substance that has the same action as the female hormone estrogen among chemical products.” It was assumed that this would interfere with normal female hormone metabolism and cause uterine cancer. The researchers pointed out that the process of applying a magic potion to the hair and straightening it with an iron was also a problem. It is said that the heat of the iron makes the medicine better absorbed into the scalp, increasing the negative effect.

This study is meaningful as it has obtained a result that was developed one step further from previous studies that hair coloring and magic agents can contribute to the development of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Previous research has shown that the risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer increases by 9% when using magic and hair dyes. This time, it was revealed that a magic agent can affect uterine cancer by analyzing whether there are any parts that disrupt hormones and which ingredients are the problem.

Women who frequent beauty salons should have regular check-ups…

It’s worth noting that chemicals double your chances of getting uterine cancer, the most common cancer in the female reproductive system. In particular, if you are a woman who uses magic often, it is good to check the health of the uterus through regular gynecological examinations. This is because in many cases, there are no specific symptoms even when cancer develops in the womb.

Cancer of the uterus is divided into cervical cancer and endometrial cancer depending on the location of the cancer. Cervical cancer is cancer that develops at the entrance to the uterus, and endometrial cancer refers to cancer that occurs in the skin inside the uterus. If both are detected early, the treatment prognosis is good, but they are difficult to detect due to the number of asymptomatic cases.

In the case of cervical cancer, bleeding from the vagina after intercourse is a typical symptom, and symptoms such as a strong odor, difficulty urinating, and excessive cold discharge may also appear. In the case of endometrial cancer, irregular and irregular uterine bleeding can occur. If these symptoms appear, it is very likely that the cancer is already quite advanced. Therefore, visiting a gynecologist once a year is the best way to prevent cervical cancer. However, women who have been diagnosed with human papillomavirus (HPV) should be screened once every 6 months.
