Lithuania reports further arms deliveries to Ukraine

9:56 p.m.: Lithuania has provided Ukraine with further military aid to defend itself against Russia. The Baltic EU and NATO country has handed over launchers and other equipment for the Nasams air defense system to Kiev, the Defense Ministry in Vilnius said. Anti-drone systems and generators were also delivered. “We hear Ukraine’s needs and call on our allies to hear them too,” Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas was quoted as saying in a statement.

Anusauskas had previously traveled to Ukraine unannounced and met with President Volodymyr Zelensky and his counterpart Rustem Umjerov in Kiev. “We talked about crucial support for Ukraine,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). On the platform, Zelensky thanked the Baltic EU and NATO country for its support: “I appreciate Lithuania’s military, political and absolutely genuine support of the population for Ukraine and the Ukrainians.”

Lithuania is one of Ukraine’s most determined supporters internationally. According to estimates by the Ministry of Defense, the Baltic state has provided aid worth more than one billion euros since the start of the Russian war of aggression in February 2022 – that corresponds to more than 1.2 percent of the country’s economic output. Around half of it was military aid.

Insiders have doubts about long-term EU military aid for Ukraine

9:52 p.m.: According to insiders, there are doubts about the EU’s planned long-term military aid of up to $20 billion for Ukraine. Several countries – including Germany – have expressed concerns about committing such large sums in advance, diplomatic circles told the Reuters news agency.

“I won’t declare them dead at this point,” says a senior EU diplomat about the aid. “But of course there can always be improvements.” Germany has a lot of questions – “and rightly so. We’re talking about a lot of money here.” The EU defense ministers are due to discuss the plan in Brussels on Tuesday.

Ukraine: Ships and barracks attacked in Crimea

6.20 p.m.: The Ukrainian military says it attacked and damaged two landing ships with sea drones on the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which was annexed by Russia. The Ukrainian General Staff has released video footage that is said to show the new attack on the west coast. In addition, a Russian soldier’s accommodation in a nearby settlement is said to have been hit by a Ukrainian rocket.

According to Ukrainian information, the two Serna-class landing ships that were hit were carrying armored vehicles, among other things. The newspaper “Ukrayinska Pravda” wrote in the afternoon, citing sources in the Ukrainian secret service, that the ships could no longer be repaired. The pro-Ukrainian Telegram channel “Krymskyj weter” (in German: “The Wind of Crimea”) reported, citing residents, about the rocket strike in the Russian barracks early in the morning. The information could not be independently verified.

Russia: Prevented Ukrainian bridgehead

5:00 p.m.: Russia says it has prevented Ukraine from establishing a bridgehead on the eastern side of the Dnipro River. According to the Ministry of Defense in Moscow, Russian soldiers attacked units of the Ukrainian 36th Marine Infantry Brigade on Thursday. Most of the Ukrainian soldiers were killed and eleven of them were captured.

In recent days there have been repeated Ukrainian attempts to establish a bridgehead on the eastern bank and on islands. The information could not be independently verified until recently. There is no Ukrainian statement. A bridgehead over the Dnipro is considered a strategically important goal for Ukraine.

Ukraine: France won’t extradite billionaire

4:45 p.m.: France will not extradite Ukrainian billionaire Konstyantin Zhevago to Ukraine. A French appeals court has ruled that a fair trial was not guaranteed given Ukraine’s martial law regime, according to the ruling obtained by Reuters news agency. “(The court) concludes that the applicant State is unable to guarantee that Mr Zhevago will be brought before a court capable of guaranteeing basic procedural guarantees and the protection of the rights of the defense.” A spokesman for Zhevagos said the French proceedings had been discontinued.
